about

An old janitor named Eddie, from Mississippi, said the title phrase to me one time in about 1982 when we were working together at a café on the Columbia U. campus. He knew I had been fighting with my girlfriend, and he said, almost unintelligibly since he had about 3 teeth and was often drunk, "Just leave! One link of chain can't rattle alone." I guess it made an impression on me, since I remembered it for over 30 years. Shortly before we went in to record this album, I sent Joe Flood a very bare bones demo that included this title and little else but the chord changes. He fleshed it out and made it into a song, in that magical way of his.

lyrics

One link of chain, one link of chain can’t rattle alone
One link of chain, one link of chain can’t rattle alone
When I leave you high and dry
Won’t nobody hear you moan and cry
One link of chain, one link of chain can’t rattle alone

I’m leaving here, leaving now won’t say a word
Leaving here, leaving now, won’t say a word
You got the knack to rattle my cage
Think it’s about time you act your age
One link of chain, one link of chain can’t rattle alone

Listen now, can’t you hear what’s gonna happen
Me on my own, you all alone
like the sound of one hand clappin’

Free at last, I’m free at last
I’m going my way
Free at last, free at last
Not a word to say
With just myself to give a talkin’ to
Wish I were back home fussin’ with you
One link of chain, one link of chain can’t rattle alone
