about

Craig and I wrote the lyrics to this song as Bush began his "Shock and Awe" bombardment of Baghdad. We had already recorded the instrumental track. We put the vocals down that night, and then we were ready to mix the record. The working title of the instrumental, as suggested by my wife, had been "Poop on a Stick."

lyrics

Human Blues
(Sunshine, Dreyer) 3/19/03 Pawling, NY

WAKE UP, GET READY, GO OUT--HUMAN BLUES
GO TO WORK, WORK HARD, DO YOUR JOB—HUMAN BLUES
GO HOME, PAY YOUR BILLS, GO TO SLEEP—HUMAN BLUES
WAKE UP –Sell your television
GET READY—a change is gonna come
GO OUT—of your way to help somebody, so you can understand where they’re coming from.
GO TO WORK—try to make your living better
WORK HARD—to give all that you can give
DO YOUR JOB—to keep your living simple, so others may simply live
I wonder what a being from another galaxy
would have to say about the human family
That we shouldn’t be divided up by politics and race
The lines between our countries can’t be seen from outer space
GO HOME—but don’t forget the homeless
PAY YOUR BILLS—save some for charity
GO TO SLEEP—dreaming of a better world,
and tomorrow go and make it a reality.
Alien voice: A few of you have more than everyone else
So you convince them to buy what you sell
Your world is beautiful when seen from above
I got the blues for the humans, cause where is the love?
Maybe I’m an alien so I shouldn’t judge
But why base your economy on dinosaur sludge
Your world is so bountiful with riches untold
I got the blues for the humans cause you sold it for gold.
(solos)
My friend from space had something big that he had to say
So I took him to our leaders and they locked his ass away
In a court of kangaroos, he stood with Buddha’s calm
And asked the corporate generals—Who would Jesus bomb?
I never seen a planet quite like this one before
You got the power to be peaceful
But you’re constantly at war
Love is something powerful that everyone can use
To fight the human blues. Human blues.
